Before you buy a travel eSIM, make sure your phone can use one. It takes ten seconds.
The quick check: dial *#06#
Open the phone app and dial *#06#. The screen shows your device identifiers.
- If you see a line called EID, your phone supports eSIM.
- If you only see IMEI numbers and no EID, your phone does not support eSIM.
Check in settings
iPhone: Settings › Cellular (or Mobile Data). If you see Add eSIM, you are ready.
Android: Settings › Network & internet › SIMs. Look for Add eSIM or Download a SIM instead. On Samsung it is Settings › Connections › SIM manager.
Which phones support eSIM
Most phones from the last five years do:
- iPhone XR, XS and every newer iPhone, plus iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation)
- Google Pixel 3 and newer
- Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Z Fold and Z Flip, and several A models
The full list, by brand, is on our compatible devices page.
The second condition: the phone must be unlocked
A phone bought on a contract can be locked to that carrier. A locked phone rejects other carriers' eSIMs, even when it supports eSIM. Ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel. Most do it free once the contract is paid.
Ready?
Pick your destination on the destinations page. With Avena you install the eSIM once; every plan you buy later lands on the same eSIM, no new QR code.
